Albertsons

Streamlining grocery shopping for millions

Albertsons, one of the largest food and pharmacy retailers in the US, was struggling to serve shoppers due to its disjointed digital ecosystem. We built a design system for all of their brand channels, cranked out a year’s worth of code, and had a seamless experience in people’s hands — in six months.

Culture

Follow the change,
not the plan.

That’s been YML’s guiding light through dark times.

Hear directly from YML employees about how we’ve adapted our culture for a world that’s forever changed.

On Remote Work — Forever

— Marcus Thompson Content Designer, Los Angeles

“Remote work is honestly just the hallmark of a forward-thinking, digital company. It really just represents the workplace of tomorrow, and it honestly lets you bring yourself to work in such a more honest way because you’re coming from a place of comfort, a place of your own choosing, as opposed to having to go to an office. So it’s really changed the way that I’m able to bring myself to everything that I do at YML.”

On Parental Support

— Melati Belot Director of Client Strategy, Atlanta

“Being a working parent at YML, I’ve never had to worry about if I was going to have to trade off being a good Mom, and being good at my job. YML has promoted, supported and celebrated my motherhood, and that means more than I could ever describe.”

On Flex Friday

— Laura Polkus Creative Director, Portland

“Having agency over how I use my time is really important to me, so having the option to end my day at 2pm on Fridays is so great. It was awesome having these kick off in the summer for what we were calling “Summer Fridays,” but I feel like the true perk is getting outside and enjoying those few extra hours of sunlight during the winter, now that our days are so short. Being able to work and get out and live your life is what it’s all about.”

On Preventing Burn-Out

— Jon Sontag Lead Designer, Cambria

“When you love what you do, it’s really hard to not burn yourself out. Because you care about your work, and you care about how that affects the people you work with, how it affects your clients, and you want everything you do to be the best it can be. But here at YML, I work with a lot of really supportive people who are constantly trying to make sure that we all don’t burn out. And I feel like that really impacts the creativity and collaboration we all bring to the table because we have that time outside of work to recharge, take vacations, enjoy our hobbies, spend time with family, and that has just really created this amazingly friendly culture here at YML.”

On Giving Back to the Those in Need with Sparsha

— Sunil Kulkante Director of Engineering, Bangalore

“Sparsha, meaning “touch” in Sanskrit, is an endeavor to make a difference in people’s lives and give back to society in our own small way. It’s a manifestation of heart, one of YML’s core values. When we started Sparsha about a year ago, it gave us the opportunity to contribute to the needs from various organizations looking for help. Personally for me, it’s given immense satisfaction to be able to help and make a difference, whether it be uniforms and books for tribal schools or beds and clothing for old age homes or food packets for the under-privileged. It’s been a satisfying journey and we hope to continue contributing for years to come.”

On Cultivating Black Talent with YML [BLK]

— AmberNechole Hart Senior Product Designer, Atlanta

“I think one of the markers of “Does a company understand what it means to hire diverse talent?” (especially black talent) is: do they have a culture that is conducive to their growth and knows how to treat them? So when I came in, and I and a couple of other people said, “Hey, we need this organization, we need [BLK] for the employees that will be coming in to the future and those that are here now” it wasn’t like we were asking for it, right? It was us communicating a need. And YML said, “This is important to us, how can we help?”

On Hiring culture adds, not culture fits

— Ben Kuncz Senior Manager, Talent Acquisition, San Francisco

“We have this saying here at YML around hiring, that I feel like speaks towards our dynamic hiring goals each year, which is to ensure we’re ‘hiring for culture adds, not culture fits.’ It really stems around this idea of bringing in different backgrounds and cultures and experiences to the table because that’s how you build products for the world. Hiring for culture fits will leave your culture stagnant, so we really want to add to our culture, not fit things into it.”

On Supporting continued education with Udemy

— Kaylee Zentai Project Manager, Atlanta

“It’s one thing to work at a company that supports its employee’s professional growth. It’s an entirely different thing, though, when a company creates opportunities for its employees to expand their knowledge academically, while helping to alleviate the financial burden of that pursuit. YML offers a program to all of its employees to complete Udemy courses and be fully reimbursed for them. These courses have helped me fill a gap as I’ve shifted my career path at YML. This year has been a massive year for me professionally. The program has allowed me to take really big, fast steps forward in my career, building my toolset through online courses and getting to immediately implement what I’ve learned in a tactile way. I have loved taking YML’s investment in me, and investing it right back into the work we get to do.”
